It automatically switches between two URL formats, the short format used for cases prior to 16-1083, and the longer format used for later cases. The template takes two positional parameters, the first and second half of the docket number.

The template also accounts for dockets filed where the Supreme Court was the original jurisdiction, typically where docket numbers start with "22O".
