Floyd Joy Mayweather Jr. (né Sinclair; born February 24, 1977) is an American boxing promoter and former professional boxer who competed between 1996 and 2017. He retired with an undefeated record and won 15 major world championships spanning five weight classes from super featherweight to light middleweight.
Following his victory over Gatti, Mayweather engaged in negotiations with 2-time light middleweight champion Ronald "Winky" Wright that would see Mayweather jump up two weight classes and Wright, who was then fighting in the 160-pound middleweight division, drop back down to the 154-pound light middleweight division.
