Zion Lodge is located in Zion National Park, Utah, United States.The lodge was designed in 1924 as a compromise solution between its developer, the Utah Parks Company, which wanted a large hotel, and National Park Service director Stephen Mather, who desired smaller-scale development.
The first visitor lodging in Zion Canyon, called Wylie Camp, was established that same year as a tent camp. Zion recorded 4.94 million visits last year, barely edging out its closest competitor. Although not pulling in nearly the numbers of Great Smoky Mountains, it's popular for some of the same reasons.
The Zion Nature Center-Zion Inn was designed by Underwood for the Utah Parks Company as a cafeteria, gift shop and office for the tourist cabins surrounding it. The inn was built in 1934 in the National Park Service Rustic style and was used by the Utah Parks Company until 1972, when the Park Service remodeled it for use as a nature center.
The Utah Parks Company, a subsidiary of Union Pacific Railroad, owned and operated restaurants, lodging, and bus tours in Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks, the north rim of Grand Canyon National Park, and Cedar Breaks National Monument from the 1920s until 1972.
