Juan Pablo Duarte y Díez (January 26, 1813 – July 15, 1876) [1] was a Dominican military leader, writer, activist, and nationalist politician who was the foremost of the Founding Fathers of the Dominican Republic and bears the title of Father of the Nation.
Duarte was born in Lisbon on 7 October 1515. [1] He was tutored by André de Resende, who later wrote his biography. [2] The Infante loved hunting and was quite a good musician. [1] In 1537, Duarte married Isabella of Braganza, daughter of James, Duke of Braganza, [2] who was dowried with the Dukedom of Guimarães in her own right.
