The Continental O-470 engine is a family of carbureted and fuel-injected six-cylinder, horizontally opposed, air-cooled aircraft engines that were developed especially for use in light aircraft by Continental Motors. Engines designated "IO" are fuel-injected.
The Plebe was powered by a 225 hp (168 kW) Continental O-470-3 piston engine with a two-bladed tractor propeller. The two crew sat in tandem with dual controls under a sliding canopy. First flown in 1953 the Plebe was evaluated by the United States Navy to meet the requirement for a primary/basic trainer.
It was fitted with a fixed tailwheel undercarriage and was powered by a single 215 horsepower (160 kW) Continental O-470 air-cooled horizontally-opposed piston engine. The pilot and instructor sat in tandem, and were enclosed under a long canopy. The prototype Chincol made its maiden flight on 14 December 1955.

After the original Bellanca company went out of business, Downer Aircraft took over the type certificate and built the 14-19-2 Cruisemaster by mating the airframe with a Continental O-470 of 230 hp. In 1958, Downer redesigned the airplane with a nosewheel and fuel injected IO-470 of 260 hp, and redesignated it the 260.
