U.S. 169 is one of three Minnesota U.S. marked highways to carry the same number as an existing state marked highway within the state. The others being Highways 61 and 65. Legally, the Minnesota section of U.S. 169 is defined as all or part of Routes 5, 7, 383, 3, 18, and 35 in the Minnesota Statutes §§ 161.114(2) and 161.117(4).
We-Chank-Wash-ta-don-pee (Dakota: Wičháhpi Waštédaŋpi, Good Little Stars), or more commonly Chaska (pronounced chas-KAY) (died December 26, 1862 [1]) was a Native American of the Dakota who was executed in a mass hanging near Mankato, Minnesota, in the wake of the Dakota War of 1862, despite the fact that President Abraham Lincoln had commuted his death sentence days earlier.

The "Hanging Monument" in Mankato, Minnesota, was a four-ton granite marker that read "Here Were Hanged 38 Sioux Indians: Dec. 26th, 1862." [ 142 ] [ 43 ] : 333 It was erected in 1912 by two Dakota War veterans, Judge Lorin Cray and General James H. Baker , to commemorate the 50th anniversary of "the city's most significant event". [ 143 ]
