Overscan is a behaviour in certain television sets in which part of the input picture is cut off by the visible bounds of the screen. It exists because cathode-ray tube (CRT) television sets from the 1930s to the early 2000s were highly variable in how the video image was positioned within the borders of the screen.
The tube has a perfectly proportioned copy of the test pattern master art (or a modified variant with the station ID replacing the Indian-head portrait, such as those used by KRLD-TV, [2] WBAP-TV [3] and WKY-TV [4]) inside, permanently deposited as a carbon image on an aluminum target plate or slide.
The tint control is normally set by sight to create satisfactory skin tones in a picture. The range of adjustment typically allows these colors to be adjusted from a green to a magenta tint. Television sets produced in recent decades typically include a (sometimes non-defeatable) distortion of the color decoding spectrum, to minimize the visual ...
1080p progressive scan HDTV, which uses a 16:9 ratio. Some commentators also use display resolution to indicate a range of input formats that the display's input electronics will accept and often include formats greater than the screen's native grid size even though they have to be down-scaled to match the screen's parameters (e.g. accepting a 1920 × 1080 input on a display with a native 1366 ...
On 2D displays, such as computer monitors and TVs, display size or viewable image size (VIS) refers to the physical size of the area where pictures and videos are displayed. The size of a screen is usually described by the length of its diagonal , which is the distance between opposite corners, typically measured in inches.
If a screen is 50 cm high and it is at a distance of 250 cm, then in picture heights, its distance is 5 H ( 250 / 50 ). Mathematically, this gives the distances shown in the following table: Distance in picture heights. Here the distance is 3.2 picture heights (H). This is the optimal viewing distance for HD 1080 video.
It is also very close to the 1.375:1 Academy ratio, defined by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a standard after the advent of optical sound-on-film. By having TV match this aspect ratio, movies originally photographed on 35 mm film could be satisfactorily viewed on TV in the early days of television (i.e. the 1940s and the ...
thumb – displays the image as a framed thumbnail at the user's default size; frameless – displays the image as an unframed at the user's default size; upright – scales the image to approximately 75% of the user's default size (25% smaller) upright=0.8 – scales the image to approximately 80% of the user's default size (20% smaller)
