The Chehalis River (/ ʃ ə ˈ h eɪ l ɪ s / ⓘ shə-HAY-liss) [6] is a river in Washington in the United States. It originates in several forks in southwestern Washington, flows east, then north, then west, in a large curve, before emptying into Grays Harbor, an estuary of the Pacific Ocean.
The highway's 22-foot-wide (6.7 m) bridge over the South Fork of the Chehalis River west of Chehalis was originally built in 1925 and was replaced by the state government in 2009. [ 24 ] [ 25 ] The new bridge, measuring 40 feet (12 m) wide, was constructed to the north of the existing structure and was opened to traffic in September 2009. [ 26 ]
The highway is closed occasionally by seasonal flooding, most recently in 1994 and 2008. [14] [15] The 731-foot (223 m) Chehalis River bridge was rehabilitated by the state government from 2019 to 2021 at a cost of $25.2 million, funded by the Connecting Washington package passed in 2015. [16]
