On December 22, 1936, it was extended southwest to Tyler. [4] On September 26, 1939, the section from Marshall to Gilmer was transferred to SH 154 when it was extended east from Quitman. [5] The route was extended south to Palestine and north to Linden on May 18, 1944. On August 28, 1958, SH 155 was signed, but not designated, along Spur 226.
In August 2003, construction began on the first 5-mile (8.0 km) segment (called Segment 1) extending east from SH 155 (Frankston Hwy) in Noonday to US 69 (Broadway Ave) in south Tyler. The road is a two-lane undivided highway, which will ultimately be expanded to a four-lane divided highway.
The SH 155 concurrency ends at 8 miles, near the University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler. SH 155 goes to Gilmer via Winona and Big Sandy. The easier route between Tyler and Gilmer is US 271. At 12.7 miles is the interchange with Interstate 20, signed for Dallas (west) and Longview (east).
