The East Coast Economic Region (ECER; Malay: Wilayah Ekonomi Pantai Timur; Jawi: ولايه ايكونومي ڤنتاي تيمور) is an economic development region based on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, which covers the states of Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang, and the Johorean districts of Mersing and Segamat. The East Coast Expressway (ECE; Malay: Lebuhraya Pantai Timur, LPT) is an interstate controlled-access highway running parallel to the northeastern coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The currently operational 433-kilometre (269-mile) segment of the expressway runs through Karak , Pahang and Kuala Nerus , Terengganu .
The Pantai Timur Range covers Machang, Gua Musang and Kuala Krai Districts in southeastern Kelantan, the western frontier of Terengganu, and Jerantut and Kuantan Districts in northeastern Pahang. Several nature reserves are located within the range, such as the Taman Negara and Kenyir Lake – the largest man made lake in Southeast Asia.
Kelantan is the only state outside of East Malaysia that does not use the term district in its second-level administrative division. Instead, the divisions are called colonies (Jajahan) or collectivities with one autonomous subdistrict. Kelantan is located in the north-eastern corner of the Peninsular Malaysia.
Before 1986, Gua Musang District was known as Ulu Kelantan (Upper Kelantan) district, as it contains smaller rivers that will later converge to form the Kelantan River. Until 1977 Ulu Kelantan also contained Kuala Krai , Dabong and Kuala Balah in Jeli .
