John David Newcombe AO OBE (born 23 May 1944) is an Australian former professional tennis player. He is one of the few men to have attained a world No. 1 ranking in both singles and doubles. At the majors , he won seven singles titles, a former record 17 men's doubles titles, and two mixed doubles titles.
Newcombe dealt with alcoholism in the 1950s and 1960s, describing himself as "a stupefied, wife-abusing, child-frightening, falling-down drunk". His alcoholism became so severe that, in 1965, he pawned his World Series ring in order to afford alcohol. He quit drinking in 1966, when his wife threatened to leave him. [5]
John Newcombe defeated the defending champion Jimmy Connors in the final, 7–5, 3–6, 6–4, 7–6 (9–7) to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1975 Australian Open. Newcombe became the first man in the Open Era to win a major after saving match points, saving three against Tony Roche in the semifinals.
