John David Newcombe AO OBE (born 23 May 1944) is an Australian former professional tennis player. He is one of the few men to have attained a world No. 1 ranking in both singles and doubles. At the majors , he won seven singles titles, a former record 17 men's doubles titles, and two mixed doubles titles.

John Newcombe defeated the defending champion Jimmy Connors in the final, 7–5, 3–6, 6–4, 7–6 (9–7) to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1975 Australian Open. Newcombe became the first man in the Open Era to win a major after saving match points, saving three against Tony Roche in the semifinals.

Defending champion John Newcombe defeated Stan Smith in the final, 6–3, 5–7, 2–6, 6–4, 6–4 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 1971 Wimbledon Championships. [1] It was his third Wimbledon singles title and fourth major singles title overall.
John Newcombe was the defending champion, but lost in the semifinals to Rosewall. This was the last edition of the tournament to be played on grass courts ; the following three years would feature clay courts , and afterwards hardcourts .
The season final was played in Dallas by the eight best performers, the top two of each group plus the next two highest point winners, and was won by Australian John Newcombe who defeated Björn Borg from Sweden in four sets, 4–6, 6–3, 6–3, 6–2. Newcombe ended the season as prize money and points leader.
