Hawkins County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee.As of the 2020 census, the population was 56,721. [3] Its county seat is Rogersville. [4] Hawkins County is part of the Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a component of the Johnson City-Kingsport-Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area, commonly known as the "Tri-Cities" region.
The State of Tennessee appointed commissioners during the years 1867–1871 to sell the delinquent railroads on which the State had statutory liens. [5] On March 20, 1872, Joseph Jacques, agent for the East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railroad Company, bid $23,000 for the property. [5] A court confirmed the sale on November 18, 1873. [5]
The current plant is on two sites: Plant A is in Kingsport, and Plant B is about 4 miles (6.4 km) away in a less developed part of Hawkins County. The two plants are connected by rail. Plant A has 120 acres (0.49 km 2). Plant B has 5,900 acres (24 km 2). The site as a whole includes 465 buildings. [1]
Hawkins County School District, also known as Hawkins County School System or Hawkins County Schools (HCS), is a school district headquartered in Rogersville, Tennessee. [ 1 ] The district includes most areas in Hawkins County , with the exceptions of portions in Kingsport (which are in Kingsport City Schools ).
Hawkins County Courthouse, ca. 1835–36, is situated at the center of Rogersville.Still in use, it is the second oldest courthouse in Tennessee. [9]In 1775, the grandparents of Davy Crockett, a future member of the United States Congress from Tennessee and hero of the Alamo, settled in the Watauga colony in the area in what is today Rogersville near the spring that today bears their name. Pressmen's Home is a non-abandoned ghost town and former headquarters for the International Printing Pressmen and Assistants' Union of North America from 1911 to 1967, in the Poor Valley area of Hawkins County, Tennessee, United States, nine miles north of Rogersville.
