The Barrytown Flats are a 17 km (11 mi) coastal plain north of Greymouth on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island.A series of postglacial shorelines and dunes backed by a former sea cliff, [1] they was originally covered with wetland and lowland forest, including numerous nīkau palms (the southern limit of this species on the West Coast). [2]
Around 1929, the Rockefeller family purchased the property. With the proceeds from the sale, the brothers of the New York District purchased the Massena estate at the northern section of the hamlet. They moved the novitiate there [3] and established St. Joseph's Normal Institute as a teacher training facility. The Institute closed in 1969.
Barrytown (originally known as Seventeen Mile Beach and Fosbery) is a town in the West Coast region of New Zealand's South Island. Barrytown sits on State Highway 6 and is 21 kilometres (13 mi) north of Runanga, on the Barrytown Flats. Punakaiki is 16 kilometres (10 mi) further north. The town is near the southern end of Pakiroa Beach.
