A forge is a type of hearth used for heating metals, or the workplace (smithy) where such a hearth is located. The forge is used by the smith to heat a piece of metal to a temperature at which it becomes easier to shape by forging, or to the point at which work hardening no longer occurs.
The open-hearth process is a batch process and a batch is called a "heat". The furnace is first inspected for possible damage. Once it is ready or repaired, it is charged with light scrap, such as sheet metal, shredded vehicles or waste metal. The furnace is heated using burning gas.
A forge is the traditional metalsmith's hearth for heating metal while forging; Soaking pits are large heated chambers, typically in-ground, where steel slabs are reheated before rolling; Another class of furnaces isolate the material from the surrounding atmosphere and contaminants, enabling advanced heat treatments and other techniques:
Brick trimmer—A brick arch supporting a hearth or shielding a joist in front of a fireplace. [21] Chimney breast—The part of the chimney which projects into a room to accommodate a fireplace. [21] Crane—Metal arms mounted on pintles, which swing and hold pots above a fire. Damper—A metal door to close a flue when a fireplace is not in use.
The hearth is where the iron is charged, melted and puddled. The hearth's shape is usually elliptical; 1.5–1.8 m (4.9–5.9 ft) in length and 1–1.2 m (3.3–3.9 ft) wide. If the furnace is designed to puddle white iron then the hearth depth is never more than 50 cm (20 in).
