In its first season, Yankee Stadium quickly acquired a reputation as a "bandbox" and a "launching pad" because of the high number of home runs hit at the new ballpark.
Yankee Stadium closed following the 2008 season and the new stadium opened in 2009, adopting the "Yankee Stadium" moniker. The original Yankee Stadium was demolished in 2010, two years after it closed, and the 8-acre (3.2 ha) site was converted into a public park called Heritage Field .

In 1936, the center field fence was moved in from 490 feet (150 m) to 461 feet (141 m) from home plate, but the flagpole and the Huggins monument remained in play. The Yankees dedicated a plaque on the center field fence for Jacob Ruppert in 1940 [4] and similar monuments for Lou Gehrig in 1941 and Babe Ruth in 1949, following their deaths. [1]
