  2. Heat pump compressor failures - twice within 30 days

    www.early-retirement.org/threads/heat-pump-compressor-failures-twice-within-30...

The heat pump unit was installed brand new less than 6 years ago. The original compressor failed in July, and the dealer service replaced it (the part was under warranty, but the 5 year labor warranty had expired 6 months ago, so we still had to shell out $1200).

Our first heat pump lasted 25 years, second one lasted 12 years, third one still ok at 5 years. Kinda like our first electric water heater lasted 30 years, second one now being replaced at 12 years. Running on just the heap pump with no resistance heat, the HP can keep us comfortable down to about 10'F.

I had an individual HVAC guy doing my repair work in the last 10 years. He suggested I replace some expensive parts in my Trane heat pump when he knew it was at the end of his usable lifespan. So I found another owner/operated HVAC company with 3 employees and low cost of doing business. I suggest you find such a HVAC business to do your repairs.

  5. Replace fan motor on Heatpump or replace the unit?

    www.early-retirement.org/threads/replace-fan-motor-on-heatpump-or-replace-the...

My 26 year old Trane. heat pump compressor locked up--3 1/2 ton. Bids for 3 ton replacement were $5300, $7200, $8900 and $4100. Needless to say who installed the whole new system. Let me just say HVAC is a high profit margin business.

Yes, that electric resistance heat (the emergency "strips" in your heat pump) require a lot of energy. Actually, they (technically) are nearly 100% efficient, which sounds great, except that electricity (per BTU) is a lot more expensive than natural gas or propane, and also that your heat pump, in normal operation, is more than 100% e

So there is no such thing as having separate A/C coil inside and a heat pump condenser inside. They are one in the same piece, just depending on which way the refrigerant flows from the compressor. Heat pump mode is just switching the condenser and evaporator functions from how they are in A/C mode. You also only have one outside compressor unit.

  8. How to air condition a FROG (finished room over garage)

    www.early-retirement.org/threads/how-to-air-condition-a-frog-finished-room...

It's an 18,000-BTU/hr AC/heat pump, with a SEER of 21. I paid $1250 buying directly from the US manufacturer, and this price included a long 33-ft refrigerant line due to the indoor and outdoor units being separated by a fair distance. This unit is to supplement the central AC of 5 tons (60,000 BTU/hr), and it works great to off-load the big unit.

  9. Thermostat for Mini-Split Heat Pumps? - Early Retirement

    www.early-retirement.org/threads/thermostat-for-mini-split-heat-pumps.110696

Does anyone have experience with thermostat's for a mini-split heat pump? I recently installed a Mr Cool 24K mini-split, and while it heats and cools the house fine, the thermostat controls are horrible. It comes with a remote control, a wall mount "mini-stat", or an app you use on your phone.

There is the heat pump for heat (1), for cooling (2) and usually some kind of auxiliary system for additional heating (3). Commonly that auxiliary system is electric heat strips. They are usually sized in KW. This auxiliary system is VERY inefficient and as a result expensive.

  11. Mini Split cleaning - indoor and outdoor | Early Retirement

    www.early-retirement.org/threads/mini-split-cleaning-indoor-and-outdoor.118065

I am the owner of a new Mitsubishi mini-split heat pump system. I haven't used it much since the latest weather has been very mild (mid 60's to mid 70's) and there isn't much reason to heat or cool the living area. I just read that I should clean both the indoor units (I have 2) and the outdoor unit at least once a year. So I looked up how to ...
