The Gibson L-1 is an acoustic guitar that was first sold by the Gibson Guitar Corporation in the early 20th century. The L-1 model was introduced first as an archtop (1902), and later as a flat top in 1926. The model is famously associated with the legendary bluesman Robert Johnson.

Starting in 1968 Gibson made J-45s as square-shouldered dreadnought-shaped guitars with a longer scale (25.5"), similar to the Gibson Dove. Serial numbers tell us that during '68 and '69 both slope-shouldered and square-shouldered J-45s were made before the model changeover was complete. In the '70s the J-45 was re-labeled as the J-45 Deluxe.
Only six Crests were produced (all in 1961), and no two were identical. Gibson produced another model called a "Crest" in 1969–70, but this was a different type of instrument, similar to an ES-330, but with a rosewood body and floating pickups. In the 1970s, Gibson produced the L-5S, which was effectively a solid-body version of the L-5 archtop.

As of 2006, the company used seven (six since 1999) serial number systems, [ 95 ] [ clarification needed ] making it difficult to identify guitars by their serial number alone.
