MS Marco Polo was a cruise ship originally built as ocean liner Aleksandr Pushkin in 1965 by Mathias-Thesen-Werft, East Germany for the Soviet Union's Baltic Shipping Company. After major alterations and additions, the ship operated as Marco Polo for the Orient Lines from 1993 to 2008. [ 1 ]
On 4 June 2007, the Marco Polo was sold to the Greece-based Global Maritime, with a delivery date on 31 March 2008. Without its only ship sold and no other ships to replace it, the Orient Line brand ceased to operate. CMA CGM Marco Polo is a Bahamas-registered container ship of the Explorer class [5] owned by the CMA CGM group. On 6 November 2012, it became the largest container ship in the world measured by capacity (16,020 TEU), but was surpassed on 24 February 2013 by the Maersk Triple E class (18,270 TEU), which is 4 metres (13.1 ft) longer at precisely 400m in length.
In early 2008, both NCL America and Orient Lines brands were discontinued, with the latter's sole ship, Marco Polo, sold to Greek interests.
