[1] Country Hills Boulevard was originally named 112 Avenue N, and was a rural road in northeastern Calgary, but was renamed in the early 1990s when its namesake community of Country Hills , as well as Harvest Hills and Coventry Hills , were constructed.
It continues as Highway 1 into both provinces. It spans approximately 534 km (332 mi) from Alberta's border with British Columbia in the west to its border with Saskatchewan in the east. [3] Highway 1 is designated as a core route in Canada's National Highway System [4] and is a core part of the developing Alberta Freeway Network.
When the Trans-Canada Highway was realigned in 1962, the segment became Highway 1A. [12] It began at British Columbia Highway 1, 3 km (2 mi) west of the Alberta border in Yoho National Park. It meandered eastward through Kicking Horse Pass to Lake Louise, generally paralleling the main Highway 1 and CPR rail line to the south. [1]
Canada operated a station about a mile north of the border 1904–1905 and closer to the border 1914–1923, 1926, 1931–1941 and from the mid-1940s. [24] In the 1970s, both the US and Canada constructed new border facilities to better accommodate regular recreational traffic.
Much of Highway 2 is a core route in the National Highway System of Canada: between Fort Macleod and Edmonton and between Donnelly and Grimshaw. The speed limit along most parts of the highway between Fort Macleod and Morinville is 110 km/h (68 mph), and in urban areas, such as through Claresholm, Nanton, Calgary and Edmonton, it ranges from 50 km/h (31 mph) to 110 km/h (68 mph).
By 1928, the year a gravel road stretched from Edmonton to the United States border, Alberta's provincial highway network comprised 2,310 km (1,440 mi). [ 9 ] Prior to 1973, the expanding highway system comprised one-digit and two-digit highways, with some numbers having letter suffixes (e.g., Highway 1X, Highway 26A). [ 10 ]
Alberta's 500 - 986 series of provincial highways are generally considered local or rural highways. The 500 - 986 series of provincial highways is divided into three sub-series: The 500/600 highways are west–east roads where the numbering increases northward from the Montana border to the Northwest Territories border.
