Made popular in the 1950s and 1960s by music and film icons such as Buddy Holly , Roy Orbison and James Dean , Wayfarers almost became discontinued in the 1970s, before a major resurgence was created in the 1980s through massive product placements .
A passenger-only version was also produced, known as the Wayfarer. The Freighter was developed during the Second World War , having attracted official attention from the British Air Ministry , which sought the development of a rugged vehicle capable of carrying various cargoes, including a 3-ton truck .

Frank Charles Dye (23 April 1928 [1] [2] – 16 May 2010) was a sailor who, in two separate voyages, sailed a Wayfarer class dinghy from the United Kingdom to Iceland and Norway. [1] [3] An account of this was written by Dye and his wife, Margaret, published as Ocean Crossing Wayfarer: To Iceland and Norway in a 16ft Open Dinghy. [4]
