The House on Ellicott Hill stands on property acquired as a Spanish grant in 1797 by Natchez merchant James Moore. Construction probably began after January 1798, when the site hosted an encampment of soldiers led by Major Isaac Guion, commander of the United States forces ordered to take possession of the Spanish posts east of the Mississippi.
It includes National Historic Landmark-designated sites: [2]. House on Ellicott's Hill; Stanton Hall; Rosalie; Commercial Bank and Banker's House (c. 1837), consisting of the Commercial Bank Building, a "one-story three-bay stuccoed brick with stone facade commercial building of two-story height with Ionic portico," and the connected Greek Revival style.
