If its pure tung oil, it can take months to fully cure. If what you have is pure tung oil, thin with 2 to 3 parts mineral spirits before applying. 24 hours between coats, very light buffing with #0000 steel wool between all but the last two coats. 2-3 days to cure the last coat before buffing (only if needed).

Minwax Antique Oil Finish. Velvit Oil. Watco Danish Oil. McCloskey Tung Oil Finish (contains pure tung oil, not linseed oil) The second "tung oil finish" is one made from varnish and mineral spirits. The approximate ratio is 1:1. This is really just a thinned varnish just like the stuff sold as "wiping varnish".

Tung oil is polymerized though the application of heat or chemicals. The polymerization allows for the creation of a more penetrating liquid. This is, of course, advantageous when using tung oil as a wood finish. Tung oil finish has become a generic term for any finish which creates the "wet look" that a high quality pure tung oil finish yields.

Great finish. Tung oil is probably the best water protecting natural finish you can get. I had read that and decided to try tung oil. I will never forget that first time. I was in Tokyo and found some tung oil in a paint shop. It was the only paint in the shop that had English writing on the can and it was only the name.

Oct 10, 2005. #5. Yes, wet sanding does cut down on dust. But as important, wet sanding will soften up the wood and makes sanding quicker and easier. On bowls, sometimes you will get tear out on the end grain, wet sanding will help take care of this while producing less heat, which can be a problem on larger turnings.

Pure Tung Oil is a slow curing finish and it is worth waiting on. But rushing it doesn't let it develop its depth of sheen in the wood. My first experience with it was in Tokyo. Went to a Japanese Paint store and they had a can of pure tung oil labeled "Tung Oil" in English. The rest of the writing was in Japanese and I couldn't read it at the ...

Tung oil does not yellow with age as much. Drying time is the drawback. Tung oil does offer more water vapor protection than BLO. Only pure Tung oil on the market know of is Hope's Tung oil. Lot of products claiming to contain Tung oil have none at all. Expensive "Polymerized Tung Oils," Tru-oil and Sutherland Wells very expensive. Do dry ...

Put on a few coats of tung oil (let them dry for a day or two between coats) then after drying do a traditional CA finish using layers of thin CA then sanding down to 12000 micro mesh. Really just looking for a durable finish the keeps the looks (but necessarily the feel) of an oil finish. Last edited: Dec 6, 2016.

Formby's, like almost every other "Tung Oil Finish" is not pure tung oil. It's a polyurethane blend, like General Finishes Arm-R-Seal you get from WC. You can get either of these and use it, or mix up a formula yourself with different blends of poly, BLO, and PURE tung oil (WC).

Why haven't I seen anything pro or con about the use of Tung oil in this forum. Am I the only one who uses it because no one has told me not to? I basically use it as I am sanding, that is I apply between grits. Let it do what it does, come back in 30 minutes. After I finish with 600. I...
