The northern shoveler (/ ˈ ʃ ʌ v əl ər /; Spatula clypeata), known simply in Britain as the shoveler, [2] is a common and widespread duck.It breeds in northern areas of Europe and across the Palearctic and across most of North America, [3] wintering in southern Europe, the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, Central America, the Caribbean, and northern South America.

The lake duck grows to 36–46 centimetres (14–18 in). Females weigh 510–700 grams (18–25 oz) and males 600–850 grams (21–30 oz). Males can be distinguished from Andean duck (Oxyura ferruginea), a similar species, by being smaller and having a flatter head. [2] Female ducks have an anti-corkscrew vagina made for difficult penetration.
In comparison to other ducks, ruddy ducks rarely fly but when they do, it is done with a very fast wingbeat and closely over the water. [10] An interesting physical feature found within this taxon of duck is the trachea, inflatable air sacs, and esophagi which are used in displays. [11] The tail of the ruddy duck is commonly seen held upwards. [12]
