Buret District was a former administrative district in the Rift Valley Province of Kenya. Its capital town was Litein . The district had a population of 316,882 in the 1999 census and an area of 955 km 2 [1] .

The Mal'ta–Buret' culture (also Maltinsko-buretskaya culture) is an archaeological culture of the Upper Paleolithic (generally dated to 24,000-23,000 BP but also sometimes to 15,000 BP). [5] It is located roughly northwest of Lake Baikal , about 90km to the northwest of Irkutsk , on the banks of the upper Angara River .
It was previously the capital of the former Buret District. Litein has an urban population of 4,000. [1] The town is along the Kericho-Sotik road. It also has a road link to Bomet. Litein's name originated from the word "liteito" - a stone used for sharpening iron objects during the pre-colonial period.
