Garcinia atroviridis, known as asam gelugur, asam gelugo, or asam keping (in Malay, Thai: ส้มแขก) is a large rainforest tree native to Peninsular Malaysia [1] and Sumatra. This species grows wild throughout Peninsular Malaysia but is also widely cultivated, especially in the northern states, owing to its economic and medicinal value.
The mixture was reportedly first developed by Rahmat Sulistyo in 1930, as a family recipe. It was first sold to the public at Yogyakarta in 1940 as a premixed jamu, though due to the Indonesian National Revolution the family moved to Semarang and there in 1951 the company Sido Muncul was founded.
The family Aristolochiaceae includes the genera Aristolochia and Asarum (wild ginger), which are commonly used in Chinese herbal medicine. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] Although these compounds are widely associated with kidney problems, liver and urothelial cancers, the use of AA-containing plants for medicinal purposes has a long history.
