Mingo County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census , the population was 23,568. [ 1 ] Its county seat and largest city is Williamson . [ 2 ]
The service area of the school was expanded by 1995 legislation that divided West Virginia into eleven districts. Southern serves all of Boone, Lincoln, Logan, McDowell, Mingo, and Wyoming counties. As of 2023, approximately 1,100 students are enrolled at the college and thirty-seven percent are part-time students. [ 5 ]
The school has 358 students for athletic purposes and is thus placed in class A for athletic purposes in the state. Upon completion of Mingo Central High School in the fall of 2011, certain students in the Williamson area had the option of which school to attend. This consolidation left Mingo County with just two high schools.

On June 7, 2011, Williamson High School was closed and consolidated with Gilbert, Matewan and Burch high schools to form the newly-established Mingo Central High School. [1] MCHS was constructed 25 miles south of Williamson at an elevation of 1,940 feet, on top of a reclaimed surface mining site in Newtown, West Virginia.
