Map of Brownsea Island. Brownsea Island lies in Poole Harbour opposite the town of Poole in Dorset, England. It is the largest of eight islands in the harbour. The island can be reached by one of the public ferries or by private boat. There is a wharf and a small dock near the main castle.

Sandbanks Ferry is a vehicular chain ferry which crosses the entrance of Poole Harbour in the English county of Dorset. The route runs from Sandbanks to Studland and in doing so connects the coastal parts of the towns of Bournemouth and Poole with Swanage and the Isle of Purbeck. This avoids a 25-mile journey by road on a return trip. [1]
Brownsea Castle, also known historically as Branksea Castle, was originally a Device Fort constructed by Henry VIII between 1545 and 1547 to protect Poole Harbour in Dorset, England, from the threat of French attack. Located on Brownsea Island, it comprised a stone blockhouse with a hexagonal gun platform.
During World War II, the western side of Brownsea Island was used as a Starfish site, a night-time decoy intended to divert German bombers away from Poole. [8] In 1942, the church suffered bomb damage during an air raid and repair work was quickly carried out in the same year. [ 9 ]
The memorial was unveiled on 13 August 2008, [3] facing Brownsea Island. [4] The island was the site of Baden-Powell's first camp in 1907 which is seen as the start of the Scout and Guide movement.
Poole Harbour is popular with bird watchers, windsurfers and yachters; it contains Brownsea Island, the site of the first-ever Scout camp. Corfe Castle is in the centre of the isle, overlooking Corfe Castle village.
