Kelso (April 4, 1957 – October 16, 1983) was a champion American Thoroughbred racehorse who is considered one of the greatest racehorses in history. He ranks fourth on the Top 100 Racehorses of the 20th Century. He defeated more champions and Hall of Fame horses than any other racehorse, and he often carried great handicaps.
The Morebattle Hurdle is a Class 2 National Hunt handicap hurdle race open to horses aged four years or older. It is run in early March at Kelso Racecourse in the Scottish Borders over a distance of 2 miles and 51 yards; there are eight hurdles to be jumped. [1] Previously a handicap race, it was first run as a conditions contest in 1984.

The great Kelso won the Stymie Handicap in 1962 then in 1965 won it again in what would be the final win of his brilliant career, capped off with his fifth American Horse of the Year title. [2] The 1972 edition of the Stymie Handicap was won by the Venezuelan longshot Canonero II who had won the 1971 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.
