Over 340 people have died attempting to reach—or return from—the summit of Mount Everest which, at 8,848.86 m (29,031 ft 8 + 1 ⁄ 2 in), is Earth's highest mountain and a particularly desirable peak for mountaineers. This makes it the mountain with the most deaths, although it does not have the highest death rate.

[ 2 ] His death caused controversy and debate because he was passed by several other climbers heading to and returning from the summit as he was dying, [ 3 ][ 4 ] although several others tried to help him.

On May 10, 1996, the 47-year-old Namba reached the summit of Everest, becoming the oldest woman to do so (her record was later broken by Anna Czerwińska of Poland who summited Everest at age 50). She was still high on the mountain rather late into the afternoon, and was descending when a blizzard struck.
