The Gurabo River is an important tributary in the valley. In a clockwise direction, the valley is bound by the Altos de La Mesa and Altos de San Luis mountain ridges to the north, the Sierra de Luquillo in the northeast, the San Lorenzo Batholith in the east and southeast, the Sierra de Cayey in the south, and the foothills of the Cordillera Central in the west.
Like all municipalities of Puerto Rico, Gurabo is subdivided into administrative units called barrios, which are, in contemporary times, roughly comparable to minor civil divisions, [1] (and means wards or boroughs or neighborhoods in English).
