John Fowler was an agricultural engineer and inventor who was born in Wiltshire in 1826. He worked on the mechanisation of agriculture and was based in Leeds.He is credited with the invention of steam-driven ploughing engines.

John Fowler (11 July 1826 – 4 December 1864) was an English agricultural engineer who was a pioneer in the use of steam engines for ploughing and digging drainage channels. His inventions significantly reduced the cost of ploughing farmland, and also enabled the drainage of previously uncultivated land in many parts of the world.
Use of ploughing engines declined in the 1920s as internal combustion engine powered tractors took over. [25] John Fowler & Co. stopped producing of ploughing engines in 1935 .
