The River Annan (Scottish Gaelic: Abhainn Anann) is a river in south-west Scotland. It rises on Annanhead Hill and flows through the Devil's Beef Tub , Moffat and Lockerbie , reaching the sea at Annan, Dumfries and Galloway after about 40 miles.
In 1871, the Dumfries Burghs had a population of 3,172 and the royal burgh of Annan had 4,174, governed by a provost and 14 councillors. Brydekirk (Scottish Gaelic: Eaglais Bhride) is a village in Annandale in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland located approximately 4 km north of Annan. The village was a planned the concept of the Paisley-Dirom family of Mount Annan, set around a bridge over the River Annan. Construction began in around 1822.
