Westmeath County Council (Irish: Comhairle Chontae na hIarmhí) is the local authority of County Westmeath, Ireland. As a county council , it is governed by the Local Government Act 2001 . The council is responsible for housing and community, roads and transportation , urban planning and development, amenity and culture , and environment .
An election to all 20 seats on Westmeath County Council was held on 7 June 2024 as part of the 2024 Irish local elections. [1] County Westmeath is divided into 4 local electoral areas (LEAs) to elect councillors for a five-year term of office on the electoral system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (PR-STV).

The three local electoral areas of Westmeath are Athlone (7 seats), Mullingar–Coole (7 seats) and Mullingar–Kilbeggan (6 seats). In September, two businessmen Edward Reilly and John Foy, both from Mullingar, attended a meeting with Westmeath County Council regarding changing the use of the convent school to a hotel and for the construction of an additional 22 houses on the site and they were unanimously given planning permission but the housing development was objected.
In the early part of the 21st century, Westmeath County Council held its meetings in the old County Hall (now the Mullingar Arts Centre) in Mount Street. [1] It moved to more modern facilities at the new County Buildings, designed by Bucholz McEvoy, to the south of the old facilities in Mullingar in 2009. [2]
