The Williamston Felpausch location was branded as the first mid-Michigan D&W store after Spartan purchased the 20-store Felpausch chain in 2007. Since the initial buyout, two additional D&W locations have been re-branded to the Family Fare banner, the Grandville location in 2010 and the Rockford location in 2012.
The location that was later to become Williamston started as the crossroad of the Grand River and Saginaw Indian Trails. It was first occupied by a small band of the Saginaw tribe of the Chippewa People which by the mid-19th century used the area as a 'summer village' (it was not used by them year-round, but they 'wintered' in the area that is now Meridian Township).

On August 6, 1856, Hosey Harvey surveyed the village in order for Dimond to have it platted with the name "Dimondale". An unusual feature of the village plat was that its streets ran Northeast to Southwest (e.g., Bridge St.) and Northwest to Southeast, while most roads in the surrounding area in Michigan ran north–south and east–west.
