The event is named after Mill Reef, a highly successful racehorse in the early 1970s. He was trained at Kingsclere, located several miles from Newbury. The Mill Reef Stakes replaced a similar race, the Crookham Stakes, in 1972. The winner of the inaugural running, Mon Fils, went on to win the following year's 2,000 Guineas.
Mill Reef was given a rating of 141 by Timeform and is listed at no. 4 in the greatest racehorses of the twentieth century. The Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury is named in his honour. Ribchester (foaled 25 March 2013) is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 2015 he finished second in the Gimcrack Stakes on his second racecourse appearance and then won the Group Two Mill Reef Stakes.

Habat (25 January 1971 – 12 January 1994) was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire.He was the top-rated British two-year-old of his generation in 1973 when he won four of his six races including the Norfolk Stakes, Mill Reef Stakes and Middle Park Stakes.
