The Grand Cayman parrot is the national bird of the Cayman Islands. This is a list of the bird species recorded in the Cayman Islands. The avifauna of the Cayman Islands included a total of 270 species, according to Bird Checklists of the World as of May 2023. [1] Of them, 163 are rare or accidental and eight are introduced.
The two sites, with a combined area of 276 ha, have been identified by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area (IBA) because it supports populations of West Indian whistling ducks (with 10 breeding pairs), white-crowned pigeons, Cuban amazons (10 pairs), Caribbean elaenias, thick-billed and Yucatan vireos, and vitelline warblers.
Mastic Reserve is an 834 ha tract of mainly forested land. It is bounded on the south and west by the Central Mangrove Wetland, and on the north by farmland.It encompasses the largest tract of contiguous native dry forest in the Cayman Islands, as well as the highest part of the low-lying island, with an elevation of 18 m.
