Joel Solon Spira (March 1, 1927 – April 8, 2015) was an American inventor, entrepreneur, and business magnate. He invented a version of the light- dimmer switch for use in homes around the United States and led his Lutron Electronics Company into the production of lighting controllers.
In 1961, she co-founded Lutron Electronics, a lighting company, with her husband, who is credited with inventing the solid-state dimmer switch. [6] She was Lutron's co-chair, and headed the company's marketing department from 1982. [7] In 1973, the Spiras founded another company, Subarashii Kudamono, to grow Asian pears in the Lehigh Valley.
In 1959, Joel S. Spira, who would found the Lutron Electronics Company in 1961, invented a dimmer based on a then-new solid state switching device called a Silicon Controlled Rectifier or SCR. This small device allowed the dimmer to be installed in a standard electrical wall box while saving energy.

In 2021, Atar Capital bought Panasonic’s American Lighting Division, which included Universal Lighting Technologies, Inc. as well as Douglas Lighting Controls, and reincorporated it as Universal Douglas Lighting Americas, Inc.(UDLA).
