Grumblethorpe was built as a summer residence in 1744 by Philadelphia merchant and wine importer John Wister, when Germantown was a semi-rural area outside the city of Philadelphia. It eventually became the family's year-round residence when they withdrew from the city during the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793 .

Brewerytown is a neighborhood in the North Philadelphia section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.An unofficial region, Brewerytown runs approximately between the Schuylkill River's eastern bank and 25th Street, bounded by Montgomery Avenue to the north and Parrish Street to the south.
West Philadelphia includes 68 of these properties and districts, including five National Historic Landmarks; the city's remaining properties and districts are listed elsewhere. Two sites are split between West Philadelphia and other parts of the city, and are thus included on multiple lists.
