Built at the time that Daraga was a visita of Cagsawa, the church was erected atop a hill in barangay Santa Maria overlooking the Mayon Volcano. [ 4 ] [ 5 ] When the Mayon Volcano erupted on February 1, 1814, the residents of Cagsawa transferred to Daraga after the destruction of their church. [ 6 ]
The Cagsawa ruins are located 2.2 km (1.4 mi) from the town of Daraga and are approximately 8 km (5.0 mi) from the city of Legazpi. [3] [4] They are also 3.3 km (2.1 mi) from the Legazpi Airport and a 55-minute flight from Manila. [5] By bus, the location is 12 to 14 hours away from Manila. [6]

Saint Gregory the Great Cathedral Parish, commonly known as Legazpi Cathedral and locally as Albay Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic cathedral dedicated to Saint Gregory the Great in the Old Albay District of the city of Legazpi, Albay, in the Bicol region of the Philippines. It is the seat of the Diocese of Legazpi. [1]
Daraga was opened in November 1914 as part of the Legazpi Division Line from Tabaco, Albay to Iriga, Camarines Sur via Legazpi City. The station was expanded in 1938 for the completion of the Manila-Legazpi Line. After years of neglect, repair works were done in 2014, when PNR was given Php1.7B for Manila-Bicol line rehabilitation.
