The badge was based on a design by a tailor at Gieves Ltd of Savile Row in London. It was first used in August 1918, and the original circlet showed a garter and buckle.The present plain circlet dates from 26 January 1923 when the badge was registered at the College of Arms and, it being noted that the garter and buckle were heraldically incorrect, a substitution was made.

In 1957, RAF Marham was awarded their new badge which depicted a blue bull as its insignia and the motto of Deter. The motto indicated their base's new role in the nuclear deterrent role and the bull symbolised that deterrence. The colour blue is thought to have a been a nod towards the Blue Danube, the RAF's first atomic bomb. [61]
On 1 April 1943, exactly a quarter of a century after the foundation of the RAF, an RAF Ensign was substituted for the White Ensign on the west side of the Cenotaph, with the change being effected just after dawn. Later the same day at 11:30 a.m., an RAF Regiment guard paraded at the Cenotaph and a wreath was placed underneath the RAF Ensign. [1]
