Alfred Holt Colquitt (April 20, 1824 – March 26, 1894) was an American lawyer, preacher, soldier, and politician. Elected as the 49th Governor of Georgia (1877–1882), he was one of numerous Democrats elected to office as white conservatives took back power in the state at the end of the Reconstruction era .
On election day, 4 October 1876, Democratic nominee Alfred H. Colquitt won the election by a margin of 77,854 votes against his opponent Republican nominee Jonathan Norcross, thereby holding Democratic control over the office of Governor. Colquitt was sworn in as the 49th Governor of Georgia on 12 January 1877. [2]
The three men included in the triumvirate, Joseph E. Brown, Alfred H. Colquitt, and John Brown Gordon, were all well-established individuals during the American Civil War, with all three having had political or military experience prior to the Reconstruction Era.
