The neighborhood is often associated with its progenitor, James S. Darling, who in 1886 purchased several parcels of land that were once part of the 18th-century plantation known as Little England. Llangollen, which takes its name from the Welsh language and historic small Welsh market town of the same name (Llan meaning "Church; a religious settlement; or an enclosure" and Saint Collen, a 7th-century monk who founded a church beside the river), [2] was originally part of a 10,000-acre (40 km 2) land grant on which a two-story manor house was built in the late 1770s.
The Washington post office was situated in the town by 1804 and still remains in the town. The town became known as "Little Washington" as early as 1804, to distinguish it from the new capital of Washington, D.C. located only 70 miles to the northeast.
