In September 1979, residents of Hazel Crest and Country Club Hills approved a $1.1 million bond for the construction of a new 16,700-square-foot (1,550 m 2) library building. The building at 3479 W. 183rd Street, designed by the architectural firm Holabird & Root (originally Holabird & Roche ), opened to the public on April 12, 1982.
It is part of Bremen High School District 228 which also includes Tinley Park High School, Oak Forest High School, and Bremen High School. The name "Hillcrest" aside from the obvious connotation of being "the highest point of a hill", is a portmanteau of the two towns which the school primarily serves: Country Club Hills and Hazel Crest.

In 2009, the district residents' per capita income was $16,413, while the median family income was $42,566 a year. [1] The school district consists of community centered schools: three K-6 elementary schools and three 7–12 high schools. [2]
