According to Swami Parmeshwaranand, although the avatars of Vishnu are countless in number and include hermits, Manus, sons of Manus, and other Devas (Hindu Deity), due to a curse by the Rishi Bhrigu, most are only partial (i.e. incomplete) incarnations. The Dashavatara is a list of the ten complete (i.e., full) incarnations. [6]

[1] [2] [3] Some scholars identify this avatar to be the same as the first tirthankara of Jainism, Rishabhanatha. [3] [4] Shaiva texts like the Linga Purana regard Rishabha to be among the 28 avatars of Shiva. [5]
Matsya is generally enlisted as the first avatar of Vishnu, especially in Dashavatara (ten major avatars of Vishnu) lists. [61] However, that was not always the case. Some lists do not list Matsya as first, and only later texts start the trend of Matsya as the first avatar. [34] In the Garuda Purana listing of the Dashavatara, Matsya is the first.
