John Kedzie was born September 8, 1815, in Stamford, New York, the son of Scottish immigrants. He graduated from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio , in 1841, and was admitted to the bar in 1847. In 1847 he moved to Chicago to begin his law practice.
