Trade Centre Limited was created by an Order in Council on 17 November 1981 to own and operate the new World Trade and Convention Centre (WTCC), championed by then-Premier John Buchanan who envisaged the new facility as a scaled-down version of the famous World Trade Center in New York City. It opened on December 15, 2017 in Downtown Halifax, replacing the older World Trade and Convention Centre. The Halifax Convention Centre is part of the $500-million Nova Centre project. With 1 million square feet (93,000 m 2 ) of mixed-use space, Nova Centre is the largest integrated development project undertaken in Nova Scotia’s history.
The new legislation allowed employees of Trade Centre Limited (TCL), which operated the WTCC, to be transferred to the Halifax Convention Centre Corporation (operating as Events East). [2] Events East is jointly owned by the province and the Halifax Regional Municipality, while TCL was a provincial Crown corporation.
