A Cumberland foal. Horses are not native to Cumberland Island.Popular myth states they were brought to the island by the Spanish in the 16th century. [1] [2] However, it is believed that these first horses more than likely did not survive due to the lack of visits made by the Spanish and the local Native Americans on the island finding them of little practical use. The Cumberland Island Visitor Center, Cumberland Island Museum, and Lang concession ferry to the island are located in the city of St. Marys, Georgia. Public access via the ferry is limited, reservations are recommended. Camping is allowed in the seashore. The 9,886-acre (40.01 km 2) Cumberland Island Wilderness is part of the seashore.
