The basic working principle of an air-operated double diaphragm pump. Cross-section sketch of diaphragm fuel pump Air-operated double diaphragm pump. A diaphragm pump (also known as a Membrane pump) is a positive displacement pump that uses a combination of the reciprocating action of a rubber, thermoplastic or teflon diaphragm and suitable valves on either side of the diaphragm (check valve ...
A diaphragm micropump uses the repeated actuation of a diaphragm to drive a fluid. The membrane is positioned above a main pump valve, which is centered between inlet and outlet microvalves. When the membrane is deflected upwards through some driving force, fluid is pulled into the inlet valve into the main pump valve.
In mechanics, a diaphragm is a sheet of a semi-flexible material anchored at its periphery and most often round in shape. It serves either as a barrier between two chambers, moving slightly up into one chamber or down into the other depending on differences in pressure , or as a device that vibrates when certain frequencies are applied to it.
Single-acting reciprocating pump consists of a piston of which only one side engages the fluid being displaced. [2] The simplest example would be a syringe . Double-acting reciprocating pump engage with both sides of the piston, each stroke of the piston carries out both suction and expulsion at the same time.
The pump's cavity is then sealed from the chamber, opened to the atmosphere, and squeezed back to a minute size. [14] [16] More sophisticated systems are used for most industrial applications, but the basic principle of cyclic volume removal is the same: [17] [18] Rotary vane pump, the most common; Diaphragm pump, zero oil contamination
Diaphragm valves can be controlled by various types of actuators e.g. manual, pneumatic, hydraulic, electric etc. The most common diaphragm valves use pneumatic actuators; in this type of valve, air pressure is applied through a pilot valve into the actuator which in turn raises the diaphragm and opens the valve. This type of valve is one of ...
It is similar to that of a piston pump, but the high-pressure seal is stationary while the smooth cylindrical plunger slides through the seal. Plunger-type pumps are often mounted on the side of the injection pump and driven by the camshaft. [4] These pumps usually run at a fuel pressure of 3,600–26,100 psi (250–1,800 bar). [3]
This pump type operates without a foot valve and without an evacuation device on the suction side. The pump has to be primed with the fluid to be handled prior to commissioning. Two-phase mixture is pumped until the suction line has been evacuated and the fluid level has been pushed into the front suction intake chamber by atmospheric pressure.
