Salty is hurt when he hears Thomas and Percy copying the way he speaks. But during a storm that night, he and Fergus fix a lighthouse and stop what could have been a terrible shipwreck. The next morning, the ship's crew thanks Salty for saving them, and he forgives Thomas and Percy for their teasing.
Thomas is chosen by the Fat Controller to collect the famous Italian opera singer Allicia Botti from the docks, leaving aside dirty Percy, who is a "Guaranteed Connection". However, Thomas' pride soon goes away once Allicia screams at the sight of a mouse in Clarabel.

Thomas gets himself into trouble, by bumping the Troublesome Trucks into Salty and spilled a crate of bouncy balls, he blames an imaginary engine named Geoffrey. But when people and other engines around the island start asking to meet him, Sir Topham Hatt also wants to meet the so-called Geoffrey.
Wanting to get his smelly job over with, Thomas disobeys Arthur's instructions to only take five trucks at a time and instead tries to take all of the trucks at once, which leads to the Troublesome Trucks making fish hit him (much to his disgust), and later rear-ending Salty and spilling fish everywhere. Thomas also ignores his job and his friends' warnings to slow down, which leads to him hitting a telephone pole and derailing. After Harvey rescues him, Thomas gives up chasing the end of the rainbow, and finishes his job. When Thomas arrives back at Tidmouth Sheds, he finds that his friends are at the end of the rainbow.

Thomas is jealous of James, who is taking the Sodor football team for the second year in a row. Thomas tries anything to get James to change his mind and let Thomas take the team, but James continuously refuses. Finally, Thomas tricks a signalman into diverting James onto an overgrown and unused track, resulting in his decorations getting ruined.
